Look what we GOT! ! !

look what we got

Woohoo!  (an exclamation that I will use a lot!~I get excited easily!)

NO, NO, NO, NO!  It is not another child for our family.  My mother-in-law will be happy about that!  hehe~~it is the BIG eyes (you know, ‘Look’ what we GOT!-get it?)  on this child that I was after!

So today my sleuthing husband found a window for free.  An ‘Anderson’ window no less~for free, I’m telling you.   You’ll never guess where he found it~~

Yeah! Okay. . . so I am thinking of changing the blog name to “Our Craigslist House”.   Just think about it. . . a house built with items you only find on Craigslist.  It sounds kind of amazing to ME, and could be quite INTERESTING!?!  Hmmmm!

Anyway, the ad on Craigslist gave instructions to respond with your name and number, etc. if you were interested, and he would contact the first one who responded.

I’m thinking~~Go for it! but I was sure we would not be the first ones to respond for a ‘free Anderson window.’  Right?  (Little skeptical me.)

We had some outings planned with our little guys today, so we headed out after he sent the e-mail with our name and number.  We went to a local park for some weekly fun activities the county had going on.  It was a beautiful day~sunny with clouds, and a cool breeze.  A perfect kind of day!

And we went bowling together.  We want to do as many fun things together as we can before we start on this HUGE project, because they will not happen as much during that time.

After we went to the park and went bowling, we got home, and there was a message from this fellow who had the window~ letting us know where he lived, etc. if we were still interested.  (Shocker, I know~~~’little skeptical me’ was surprised once again! )  At that point, it was up to me to go get the window as my husband needed sleep for work tonight, so I called the fellow back for the specifics, and made plans to pick it up.  AND to top it off, he didn’t live eons away!

Wanna see the pictures?

Brand new!  Can you believe it?  Double pane, Double hung, and you can’t easily tell from the picture, but it is a sandstone color.  Pretty nice, huh?  We will need a window, right?

Nice, huh?

Nice, huh?

Uh, yeah!  And when we pulled the window out of the box so my husband could see the freebie, out fell onto the ground this little gift of an also “BRAND NEW door handle set!”  Do you feel like you are watching The Price is Right Home Building Edition??    YES!  God was just showering us with blessings!  Didn’t have a clue this was in there.

One of two access panels~FREE!

One of two access panels~FREE!

Okay, so we also got two access panels thrown in with the deal.  WHAT are access panels, and where do you use them?  I wasn’t about to turn him down when he offered them to me with the window.  He said they “could be used as a way to close off, but still have access to like, your water heater”.  I am telling you right now, I am not going to have only this little access panel for our water heater.  I couldn’t fit through it, I don’t think.  So, my mind is wondering~~I have thought that perhaps it could be a way to access our water connections on our ‘wet wall’~~the wall in the house that the water, plumbing, etc. run through???   Anyway, I thought it would be better to take them and have them if we need them, rather than to not take them and then need them later.

What do you think they can be used for?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.  If you have any thoughts, I would love to know them!

difficulties

Some mornings I wake up and my mind just keeps reeling.  .  . about all things LOG HOUSE!  There are many facets to building a home, you know, especially when we are the ones actually going to do the building of it.  I think about the footers, and how wide they should be, or the foundation, and how that works, or how the rebar will fit into the foundation, and how deep do the footers have to be?, and do we actually need to have an architecture look at our plans? (not required in our county), and how do we do  _________ (fill in blank~) I think about it. . .   and I keep pondering these things. . . ughh, and wonder how it will all work out.

SURPRISE!~~~~But, y’all knew there is a lot to think about and plan when someone is going to build a home, right?

You’re all thinking “Well, anybody knows that to build a house, you have to do many things, figure all kinds of things, right!”

WHAT     WAS     I      THINKING?

Of course, there are a ba-zillion things to take care of for building a house.  I do happen to know that.  😉

My point here is that I wake up, and can’t say that I have a lot of peace just all settled about how everything is going to work out for our build.  I know that other people have their own issues going on in life, and they are a challenge, and they probably wake up thinking about their own concerns with just a tad bit of anxiety maybe?  Maybe? Surely other people wake up with their own concerns, right?

The point of my post today is just to really say that the other morning I woke up and had just a complete peace.  YES I did!  Complete peace~~

You know, sometimes it comes from out of nowhere.  You have so much going on, and your mind just doesn’t settle down.  When will I have peace?

And THEN, it happens~~you know that the Lord’s peace is taking over, and you don’t need to concern yourself with all of the little details.  He is just going to take care of it for you!  YAY! ! !   Counting on Him!

Pinch me!~there is peace in all of this commotion!

Getting life’s difficulties into prespective.

My mom used to say that sometimes when she thought she couldn’t handle something, she would have to walk away (literally walk a distance away) and look back, and see that the problem was not as big as she imagined it to be.  I like thinking about that. . .

A Visit to Mark (not my Mark) and Susan’s cabin~

By June 29, 2016 Blessings along the way!, General
Fun to see their log home!

One of the nearest cabins we have found that was built in the same style of log home that we are planning on building was Mark and Susan’s cabin, up almost to Canton, Ohio.

So a trip was in order.  We called them, and they were so gracious to welcome us to their home!  They have been working on it for a few years.  IT.IS.INCREDIBLE!   And. . . we were privileged to be among their guests that get a ‘selfie’ taken in front of their marvelous front door.  See picture above~It seems to be What They Do.   😉  LOVE IT!

Would you like to take a small gander at some of their cabin’s amazingness (I made that word up~thank you!) with us?  I will say~ up front~ that Mark is obviously an amazing perfectionist.  (I can tell you. . . we will not be doing some of the stunning touches that he did so meticulously, because we are not talented in the ways that he is.  But, I am hopeful that we will have some of our own special touches.)   What a blessing it was to see and hear about their journey in person.  Let me show you some~~~

We were so blessed.  Mark had taken the class a few years ago that we just took this past February; and he built his log home the way they teach.  I might say again: “with some really special touches.”   It was good to be able to talk with them and hear their stories, and see an actual cabin built the ‘butt-and-pass’ style.  Isn’t their cabin the best?  It is just the sweetest!  I didn’t want to steal all of his pictures, but this gives you a taste of what we will be doing.

I so appreciated some of the things they told us~~I was thankful for their honesty about the challenges they faced working on such a huge project together.  A lot of blood, sweat and tears, but the end result is (once again) INCREDIBLE!  They were so kind to let us just peek at everything~it helps to see things in person, you know.  I might have to take another trip up there just to be reminded of how things CAN actually come together.

Big THANKS to Mark and Susan for allowing us to visit and for their hospitality!  We were encouraged, (even though there was a touch of ‘overwhelmed-ness’ looking at everything that needs doing to get to the point they are at!)  We hope to show them our cabin one day!

NO Pine trees yet!~~basement first?

By June 26, 2016 General
Straight and tall, but maybe the kind we can't use?

As I was sitting trying to decide what topic to post about tonight, I got on my husband’s computer (because you know, we are down 2 computers at this moment) and I was booting up the computer, and his screen saver came up, which is the picture at the top of this post.  He had just recently, and proudly I might add as he is not as computer savvy as some, changed his screensaver to this photo.  Notice the tall straight trees!  Nice looking, huh?

It reminded me that yes, we have no pine trees yet.  We are in essence still looking for trees.  That sounds weird~~’looking for trees’.  Yes, I do look at trees, and yes, we do look for trees as we are driving places (but alas, there truly are NOT trees locally that would work for our log home~   sigh, say that to myself 10 times again~~there truly are NOT trees locally that would work for our log home), and we look on Craigslist because there are people who want their pine trees taken down, but so far- NO, they are not the right type of wood that we can use for our home.

I even had one of the forest consultants e-mail us with the name of a logger who had pine, and upon checking into it, the trees were unfortunately the ‘loblolly’ pine species, (which is one of the funniest names I have ever heard of for  a tree~~sounds like a lolli-pop kind of tree.)   ANYWAY, it is another name for the yellow pine which grows fast and tall, but not strong. . . because it grows fast and tall.  The layers are not solid like we need them to be.  Okay, so maybe TMI for your cares, but it is just an idea of what we keep running into at this point.

They LOOK like they would be great, but alas~NO!

They LOOK like they would be great, but alas~NO!

I say that to say that in our search, we have NOT been successful.  NO TREES YET!  But I am truly not discouraged.  I think I am actually thankful (to you know Who) not to have to worry with logs laying on our property at this point needing tending to via rotating and treating, mainly because we need to build the basement first.  (If we find them however, WE WILL tend to them and we will rotate them.)  But so far, I think the Lord knows what we can handle, and the basement needs to come first.

Beginnings of a slipform basement~~

Beginnings of a slipform basement~~

So. . . .

No pine trees yet!   So. . .

We wait on the Lord! and work on other things in the meantime.  Yes~

Affording the build=Sweat Equity + Creativity

By June 23, 2016 General
AHHH! Freedom! Let's take this exit!

We know it takes money to build a home.  We get that.  However, the organization that we went through to learn how to build with logs in this manner~~the butt and pass method~teaches the students HOW to afford the log home build economically, and gave some ‘way creative’ examples for how to build it while staying debt free.  And it is amazing to see all of the people who are affording it, and the creative methods they use to be able to NOT go into debt.

Yeah, we don’t want to go into debt either.  That is the plan.  We do have equity in our home.  So, the idea here is to use that equity, and build the bulk of our log home with that equity, and then sell the house we live it, and use the rest of the money to finish off the log home.  (Does that make sense?~~kind of confusing)  But, then we will be DEBT free.

Looking forward to this!

Looking forward to this!

Right now, we are not really in debt~~Okay, so yeah we are~~house debt!  You know, I will put a plug in for Dave Ramsey here though.  We were blessed to be able to go through his course at our church, and we have utilized it.  (If you haven’t heard of him, he is kind of a guru for being debt free.  Look him up if you want to be out of debt.  It will be worth your while.  Sooooo. NICE. To. LIVE. without. DEBT.)  But, like I said, we still owe on our home.  HOWEVER, as soon as we get done with this build, we shouldn’t have any debt at all.   The plan is to move to complete FINANCIAL FREEDOM!

We are in the process right now of refinancing our current home.  Got an INCREDIBLE rate on a loan, and once that refinance is final, the plan is to jump in and get started.  We are about two weeks away from closing on this new loan.  WOOHOO!  Things are gonna start happenin’. . .

With that being said, I guess you could say I don’t mind putting sweat equity into our living if it means that we are going to be in a better place ultimately.  THAT is the plan.  Lots of creativity (will tell you about that soon), AND lots of sweat equity (I don’t think I need to explain that one.)

No one ever said following your dreams is easy!

No one ever said following your dreams is easy!

It is not going to be easy.~~UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE YEAR!  We know it is not going to be easy.   I think I am trying to psyche myself up for this, right?

Okay. . .insert deep breath. . .We are 1) trusting in the Lord and 2) looking down the road at the end of the journey and where we will be then, Lord willing.

We have to plan, which we are working on slowly.  And then. . . (as I have said, it can be totally overwhelming if you look at all there is to be done~~) we just look at what is ahead right now, and what needs to be taken care of right now, and taking care of that, so we don’t STRESS out; and pray, and HOPE that people are praying for us!  (hint, hint)  Prayers are appreciated!

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I am praying, and I am learning to be thankful *IN* all circumstances. . . you know, while they are happening, when I am stressed, or feeling overwhelmed.  His word says to be thankful, and I am working on it.  And it makes this journey more exciting, and fun to think about. . .He blesses me when I do that!  😉
